Malaysian Prime Minister Visits Jamaica

Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi visited Jamaica for two days (May 2-3, 2006). Mr Badawi and various ministers of his own parliament met and discussed many issues with representatives of the Jamaican government, he also met with the Governor-General Prof Kenneth Hall and Opposition Leader Bruce Golding before making a tour of Highway 2000.
Talks with the Portia Simpson Miller led Jamaican government included offshore oil exploration by Malaysia’s state owned oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), increasing Malaysia’s supply of natural gas to Jamaica, housing and infrastructure development as well as various other topics including sports, education, agricultural development and trade.
Abdullah also stated that Jamaica could benefit greatly from a relationship with The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and that Malaysia could be the gateway for jamaican goods and services destined for ASEAN countries and Jamaica could be a hub for ASEAN intended for the entire Caribbean.
Malaysia is a developing south-east Asian country of over 26 million people. Over the past decade Malaysia has enjoyed steady growth it it’s economy with the major contributors being petroleum, tin and rubber.
