The Spanish Bridge that spans the White River in St Ann was built in the 17th century before Jamaica became a British territory. It is one of the lasting indicators of Spanish colonization in the White River Valley. A few miles away at Rio Nuevo in St. Mary was the site of the final battle between British and Spanish forces to determine possession of Jamaica.Spain formally conceded Jamaica to England by the Treaty of Madrid in 1670.

The new $5000 note bearing the image of late former Prime Minister, Hugh Shearer is the newest currency issued since the $1,000 went into circulation in April 2000. On the reverse of the note is a stylized aerial view of Highway 2000 and beautiful Frangipani blossoms. Two hundred thousand notes of the new $5,000 bill was put into circulation on day one.

The White River runs along the border of St. Mary and St. Ann, twisting and turning its way through the forests to the outskirts of the tourist town of Ocho Rios where it meets the Caribbean sea. The White River is so named because the limestone rocks in its bed sometimes give the water a white, milky colour. The White River flows through some of the most picturesque landscape and forested areas of Jamaica and the river owes much of it’s beauty, charm and popularity to it’s surroundings.

Holywell National Park is a recreational area located 400th sq ft above sea level in the hills of St. Andrew. It is a part of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park conservation spread out over 78,000 hectares (200,000 acres) of tropical rain-forest in the north-east of Jamaica. It is one of Jamaica’s primary eco-tourism attractions and is a sanctuary for several species of birds like the woodpecker as well as many plants such as firms and trees not seen anywhere else on the island.

The Zenaida Dove is often times wrongfully called a Turtle Dove. The The Zenaida Dove is only found throughout the Caribbean and the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. The bird is resident and abundant over much of its range in Jamaica and due to that are commonly hunted as a game bird. It is the national bird of the British Overseas Caribbean Territory of Anguilla.

Guavas are plants which contains about 100 species of tropical shrubs and small trees. They are native to the western hemisphere in all countries in the regeon of the Caribbean Sea. The term “guava” is derived from the Arawak word guayabo “guava tree”, via the Spanish guayaba. The guava is rich iron, folic acid, potassium, calcium and Vitamins A, B and the guava fruit five times as much Vitamin C as an orange.

Jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica. Jerk seasoning consists of pimento, scotch bonnet peppers cinnamon, scallions, nutmeg, thyme, garlic and other ingredients. Jerk seasoning is traditionally applied to pork and chicken. Oil barrels cut lengthwise, attached with hinges and drilled with ventilation holes are increasingly used to prepare jerk dishes and can be seen in major towns all over the island at night or at fairs, trade shows and various others gatherings and events.
