It was a nail-biting finish at the Miss Universe 2010 pageant at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas earlier this evening, as Jamaica’s very own, Yendi Phillipps, put the controversy that dogged her Miss Jamaica Universe crowning behind her, and placed 2nd to Miss Mexico, Jimena Navarrete. Phillipps did well throughout, being front and centre in the dance routine that kicked off the live broadcast on NBC-TV.

She polled the most points in the swimsuit contest, and second-most in the evening gown section. She also handled herself very well in the interview section, where she was asked a tough question about capital punishment.

In the end, Yendi Phillipps made herself and all Jamaica proud, as she was named the 1st runner up in the 2010 Miss Universe 2010 pageant. Congratulations and kudos to her!

A leading local expert in energy says that efforts to drill for oil and gas off the coast of Jamaica are scheduled to resume in 2011, and that adequate systems are in place to prevent any accidents similar to the one in the Gulf of Mexico in April.

Consultant to the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica Dr Raymond Wright said 12 of 16 blocks have been licensed for drilling for oil offshore Jamaica. He said environmental impact assessments will be done on each drilling site, which involves collection information on Jamaica’s flora and fauna.

However, he refused to be drawn on whether oil would be found in commercial quantities in Jamaican territory.

“There is oil and gas to be found in Jamaica. There are prospects for such (oil and gas) to be found in deep water, essentially the same water depths as those in the Gulf of Mexico,” he said.

Wright was the guest speaker at the annual general meeting of the Jamaica Institute of Environmental Professionals (JIEP), held at the Environmental Division of the Ministry of Land and Environment in Kingston last Wednesday.

He cited human error for the spill at BP’s Deepwater Horizon well in April, which resulted in 3.9 million barrels of oil gushing out into the ocean. Wright said it was “man-made errors in large measure” resulting in the non-maintenance of a blowout preventer which caused the spill. He noted that BP was “caught off guard” by the accident and “did not know what to do and how to respond”.

A blowout preventer is a large, specialised valve used to seal, control and monitor oil and gas wells.

One of the United Kingdom’s (UK) oldest and most prestigious chocolatiers, Charbonnel et Walker, is interested in using Jamaican cocoa in the production of its range of handcrafted chocolates. Next month, the Chairman of the company, Galvin Weston, will be visiting Jamaica for meetings with representatives of JAMPRO and coco industry authorities, to look at potential joint venture investment in a cocoa farm in the island.

The principals of the company are already investors in Jamaica as the owners of the Frenchman’s Cove Hotel in Portland, and the chocolatier uses Jamaican rum in some of its chocolate varieties.

Mr. Weston, who took High Commissioner, Anthony Johnson, on a tour of the company’s Old Bond Street store, said that the plan is to develop a tourism product that would incorporate tours of a cocoa farm and a sugar estate, with a stay at Frenchman’s Cove.

High Commissioner Johnson welcomed the company’s interest in Jamaican cocoa and encouraged the chairman to look at developing a Jamaican chocolate and also prospects in agro-tourism.

Dolphin Cove, recipient of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association’s (JHTA) Best Attraction Award for 2010, is expanding its operations to cater to both local and foreign patrons who contribute to making it a choice destination. The expansion, which should see the newest Dolphin Cove being opened at Point in Hanover, is expected to create employment for many young Jamaicans in that area.

“We broke ground for this attraction in September last year, and it is scheduled to be opened in a few weeks,” Public Relations Manager at Dolphin Cove, Roger Kerr, tells JIS, pointing out that some $500 million was pumped into the development of the new Dolphin Cove.

He says that the attraction will be opened in stages, starting out with dolphins, sharks and stingrays but, in the future, it is expected to grow to equal or even surpass the offerings at Dolphin Cove Ocho Rios.

“We are establishing on 20 acres of land, so it is going to be a big park, and when completed we estimate that we will employ over 200 persons,” he says.

With the heat of summer already on, Mr. Kerr is confident that persons can look forward to a real “cool” experience at Dolphin Cove, where they can swim with the dolphins, pet the sharks, snorkel with the stingrays and enjoy the beach.

Wallenford Coffee Company Limited, a state-owned enterprise, is finalising a deal with Starbucks Coffee Company that will see Jamaican coffee added to the menu in 55 of the international chain’s ‘high-end’ stores. Christopher Gentles, director general of the Coffee Industry Board (CIB), who confirmed the deal Tuesday, said Starbucks, which has 4,800 coffee bars worldwide, is treating the placement as a pilot project that “if successful, they may spread to more establishments”.

Wallenford, which is headquartered at Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston, farms in the Blue Mountains and has its production facilities in Clarendon, will supply Starbucks through an undisclosed coffee dealer in the United States (US).

The programme will use a relatively small volume of coffee initially, Gentles said. “We trust that it will grow to be significant within the United States.” Jamaica has been trying for years to break into the US market in a substantial way but has faced two hurdles – the majority of its coffee was committed to Japan, limiting volume supplies to new consuming nations, and the cost of the coffee, which is the most expensive in the world.

But Japan is now demanding 40 per cent less of the Jamaican beans, opening up opportunities for Jamaican dealers to enter into new contracts.
