			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The JCDC/NGJ National Visual Arts Competition &amp; Exhibition 2010  opens this Sunday at the National Gallery of Jamaica – Orange Street,  Downtown Kingston at 3:00 p.m. 153 awards will be presented to 103 artists. Admission is free.<span id="more-1210"></span> Members of the public will be invited to vote for their favourite piece  in the show.  The artwork receiving the most votes will receive a cash  prize and a trophy. The winner will be announced later.</p>

<p>The exhibition will close on August 28 after which a portion of the  exhibition will travel to three other locations across the island. National Gallery Viewing Hours:         Tuesdays – Thursdays 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m, Fridays 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m, Sundays &amp; Mondays – Closed. Public Voting:                                      July 25 – August 7 during National Gallery opening hours. The opening function will take place on the lawns behind the NGJ  building and the exhibition will be located in the NGJ&#8217;s ground  exhibition galleries.</p>
<p>The National Visual Arts Competition  and Exhibition is an annual colloboration between the NGJ and the JCDC  and is part of the annual Independence Festival. This project is sponsored by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), Claro and the Urban Development Corporation (UDC).</p>

This year, Labour Day falls on Sunday, 23rd May, however, in keeping  with regulations regarding the observance of Public Holidays, Labour Day  will be observed on May 24.</p>
<p><strong>Labour Day 2010 Slogan and Focus</strong></p>
<p>The slogan for Labour Day 2010 is “Our Children…show them we Care.” Jamaicans are urged to go out and take part in community projects as we focus our efforts on the mental and social development of children – mentoring, teaching and  other forms of intervention.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Many events are to competed over the 3 day event </span>events including sprint races, hurdles, middle distance track events,  jumping and throwing events, and relays. <span style="font-size: x-small;">The International Athletics Federation has recognized the CARIFTA Games as a qualifying meet for the first ever World Youth Olympics which will take place in Singapore next August.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Haiti to participate</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Three months after experiencing the earthquake, Haiti is expected  to send a team to participate in the games. Organizers of CARIFTA and  representatives from both private and public sector organizations in the  Cayman Islands have been working  together to raise funds to donate to the Haitian team, to assist with  offsetting the country&#8217;s athletic federation costs of participating in  games. Fundraising efforts will include a silent auction which will  feature a pair of autographed track shoes signed by Usain Bolt, current  World Record holder and past CARIFTA athlete.</p>

<p>Dine on traditional food such as dookunu brought from Ghana with the same name, puddings, fried fish and bammy or vegetarian from raw to ital. You are invited to dance to the rhythms of the Kumina drums brought to our shores from the Congo, the Mento band our own indigenous folk music, let loose at the African Dance Party hosted by Mutabaruka with his vast repertoire of rhythms from the continent, participate in Nyabinghi chanting with Rastafarians or join the children as they playfully follow closely behind the Jonkunoo band with its main character Pitchy Patchy which traveled with us from West Africa.</p>
<p>The spoken word is expressed through ourstories of that cunning spider Ananse also from West Africa as told by Story teller extraordinaire Amina Blackwood-Meeks along with resident Poets Royal African Soldiers and their friends and in an Open Mike segment where participants are free to express themselves. Each year there is a Main Attraction and at sunset patrons are invited to gather, where homage is paid to the ancestors and offerings are placed on the Ancestral Raft before it is sent floating into the Caribbean Sea.</p>

Restaurant Week is an event where a selected group of restaurants offer a three course menu at a set, and<span id="more-894"></span> reduced price to patrons.</p>

<p>Restaurant week will be held from November 7 &#8211; 14 and 45 restaurants will be participating with prices slashed by at least 30% for the duration of the event only. Restaurants are categorized by the types of dishes they will serve like epicurean, delectable, savoury, tasty, dine and dance and high rollers.</p>
